Knowing that they could not send him to college to earn a full degree due to poverty, the parents of Jhonrick Art Catindoy Orense told him to just study in TESDA or perhaps just quit school altogether to find a job. But this young man had big dreams and he didn’t follow his parents’ advice – and he would actually fulfill his dreams of completing a college degree!
The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) offers various diploma courses for people who wish to study a skill which they can use to find a job or even open a business later on. A lot of poor families have benefited from TESDA, allowing their children to still learn something worthwhile to help them land good jobs even though they are not able to graduate from college.
While there’s nothing wrong with just completing a TESDA course, a lot of young people hope they could really earn a college degree, not just a TESDA diploma.
For Jhonrick, a TESDA diploma was alright but he wished to earn a degree and find a good job to support his family.
Despite his parents’ sentiments about him going to college, he chose to enroll in college. Four years later, he was able to graduate from cum laude from his course, Bachelor of Arts in Journalism! The young man shared his story on social media to inspire others to work hard to reach for their dreams, even if they might not get the support of their families at first.
“Nak, mag-TESDA ka na lang.”
“Magtrabaho kana lang muna.”
“Wala pa tayong pera.”
Pero matigas yung ulo ko. Hindi ko sinunod yung utos niyo. Pinili kong mag-aral. Kaya heto yung resulta.
And the ‘result’ is that he graduated cum laude! Congratulations, Jhonrick!
“This is not to boast my achievements. Rather, I am posting this to inspire and motivate everyone who think they can’t. Always think that financial constraints is not an excuse. Just like you. I am an ordinary person but I chose to do things extraordinary. A friendly reminder that poverty is never a hindrance to success and anything you aspire and dream of will always be possible with faith,” Jhonrick explained.
So, to those who are feeling down because they are too poor and can’t study in college next school year, don’t be. Don’t stop dreaming… because your dreams just might come true!
