These days, many farmers in the Philippines are having trouble getting profit from their farm goods, particularly rice, because the rice tariffication law led to the lowering of ‘palay’ (unmilled rice) prices. While the rice traders sell the rice for as high as Php30 to Php50, they are buying the rice from the farmers for as low as Php7 to Php12! It’s really sad.
A lot of netizens are encouraging everyone to buy rice directly from the farmers, to ensure that they can have better income. Upon learning this, and to fulfill his plan of donating relief goods and food to earthquake-hit areas in Mindanao, Syrian vlogger Basel Manadil decided to hit two birds with one stone.
Basel, who goes by the name ‘The Hungry Syrian Wanderer’, traveled all the way to Pampanga to buy all of a farmer’s rice that he was selling by the street. Instead of buying from the mall for his own convenience, Basel traveled to Pampanga to help the farmer.
“PAKYAW PANINDA Bigas! If u follow my last post, I posted about finding bigas to donate sa Mindanao and I want to buy direct sa farmer to help them as well. I drove North for 3 hrs and ended up in Floridablanca Pampanga. Met 71 years old farmer!! Pinakyaw ko na ang lahat ng panindang bigas ni Tatay. Mga tunay na BAYANI! Kung wala sila, wala tayong pagkain sa mesa. Saludo po ako sa mga local farmers. LINDOL KA LANG, FILIPINO KAME. HELP UNTIL IT HURTS – your Basel Boy,” Basel wrote on Facebook.
“Dont wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope. I just want to use this platform to help those who are in need and to send awareness. If I can do it, you can too. Spread Kindness and Positivity.”
Basel went viral because he didn’t just help the people in Mindanao, he also helped the farmer! Kudos!
