It is part of the Philippine culture for children to take care of their parents, particularly when they are old and already unable to support themselves. There are even children who remain single because they become the family’s breadwinner and have to work extra harder to provide for the needs of their elderly parents.
Just like how a lot of parents sacrifice their own happiness to ensure that their children are well provided for as they were growing up, many children also sacrifice their needs and wants to give their parents a better life when the already can.
Recently, John Vincent Calleja Guiruela went viral over a photo he shared on Facebook as he went window shopping outside the Spyder outlet a SM Legazpi located in Legazpi, Albay. Carrying packs of adult diapers, John Vincent looks longingly at some of the items on display at the store, but he could not buy the helmet he wanted.
“Priorities,” he wrote. The picture is self-explanatory as it clearly refers to his changed priorities from buying something for himself to buying adult diapers for someone. The ‘someone’ was later identified as John Vincent’s bedridden mother.
Impressed that this young man would think more of his mother than buying something that he so obviously wanted, many netizens urged the brand to give him a new helmet or for some kindhearted netizens to make sure he gets one.
Just days after he posted the picture, it managed to reach Spyder Philippines – and they listened to netizens’ suggestions! John Vincent was invited back to the store for a second round of ‘window shopping’. This time around, however, Spyder Philippines gave him the helmet he wanted, for free!
The brand also gave this inspiring young man some packs of diapers for his mother. So, John Vincent was able to pose outside the store with the packs of diapers for his mom – and the new helmet he got as an early Christmas gift from Spyder Philippines! Wow.
