He was only doing his job and forbidding commuters from bringing liquids at MRT-Boni station for security measures, but PO1 William Cristobal would end up with his uniform dirty after a Chinese tourist threw her ‘taho’ drink at him!
The incident happened last Saturday, February 9. Prior to the incident, the MRT-3 management announced that liquids will no longer be allowed at the station and on the trains, for security measures as directed by the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO).
Photos taken from the ‘taho’ incident went viral, with many people feeling angry at the Chinese tourist identified as 23-year-old fashion student Jiale Zhang. A lot of people called on the government to deport this woman and that she should pay for what she had done to this policeman.
But netizens were quite impressed at how Cristobal handled the situation. While he was obviously furious, he exhibited incredible patience and self-control by not retaliating on the woman even if many others would have surely done something to also humiliate her in that situation.
The policeman admitted that he felt insulted by the Chinese woman’s actions, especially because he was on duty in his capacity as an officer of the law!
“Naka-uniform ako then on duty, andito ako sa sarili kong bansa then foreigner ang mag-ano sayo, siyempre manliliit po tayo,” Cristobal said.
But while he was angry, Cristobal followed standard procedures to book the Chinese tourist over the incident. This earned him much praise from netizens.
PNP chief Director General Oscar Albayalde shares netizens’ admiration on Cristobal.
During the flag raising ceremony at Camp Crame on Monday, Albayalde awarded Cristobal with a ‘Medalya ng Papuri’ as he commended the policeman for this admirable attitude during the incident.
“Ipinakita niya iyung kaniyang tiyaga at pasensya na kailangan ng ating kapulisan talaga,” Abayalde said.
“Dapat yan ang gayahin ng ating mga pulis — disiplinado, pasensyoso.”
