An old man who was trying to fix his dilapidated bike drew netizens’ attention and led to many sharing their blessings so he could have a new bike plus groceries to feed his family!
It all started when Roswel Placigo, a pastor, spotted Tatay Jhonny Cuevas fixing his dilapidated bike by the street. Taking pity on the old man and knowing that he could rally help from netizens, Roswel shared some photos on Facebook.
As netizens promised help for the old man, Roswel managed to track him down to his house in Brgy. 39 in Calvary Hill, Tacloban City. Just like his bike, Tatay Jhonny’s house is also dilapidated. Soon, help poured in for Tatay Jhonny, with people contributing money to buy him a new bike and also provide groceries for his family!
It turned out that Tatay Jhonny goes around town to fix umbrellas for a living. But because he only earns a small amount of money for the umbrella repair work he does, he did not have enough money to get a new bike or get new parts to fix it.
Thus, he uses various things to fix the bike, adding slats of bamboo and discarded water tubes as alternative to real bike parts. Most of the bike is held together by tie wires.
Despite his bike being so dilapidated, Tatay Jhonny is also so hardworking and determined to work so he could feed his family.
Although he lives in the nearby town of Palo, Leyte, Roswel personally visits Tatay Jhonny to bring him the donations sent by netizens. He goes out of his way to help the old man and his family – yet still feels happy about it.
“Masaya po, na di ko inaasahan na may mga tao po palang handang magbahagi ng blessings nila kahit nasa sitwasyon tayo ng pandemic,” he said. “Masaya kasi nabigyan si tatay ng bagong bike at may mga handa pang magpaabot ng tulong.”
