He probably didn’t have a lot of money but because he loves his sweetheart so much, one guy proposed to her – and it happened at a KFC outlet. But someone spotted them and had a good laugh over the ‘cheap proposal’. The person mocked them on Twitter, but the tweet backfired and the couple would soon receive dozens of offer for sponsorship from international brands!
Later identified to be Bhut’ Hector, the South African guy was happily proposing marriage to girlfriend, Nonhlanhla. It was a simple, sweet proposal that didn’t involve a lot of fanfare. But it was something that the two enjoyed – and they were so happy about it.
Little did the couple know that someone was watching them and mocking the proposal as something cheap. Twitter user Anele (@butterfly_Anele) shared a snapshot of the couple. “SA men are so broke they even propose at KFC,” she shared with laughing emojis. “They have absolutely no class. I mean who proposes at KFC?”
She probably thought all her friends would agree, but the tweet would soon reach many people who got angry over the insensitive remark. Considering that she’s working as events coordinator and journalist, as she claims on her Twitter bio, then she should know better than mock someone. But the mean tweet would actually benefit the couple.
The hashtag #KFCProposal would soon go viral, getting the attention of many famous brands. KFC South Africa was among the first ones to offer something for the couple. But many brands, famous personalities, companies, and even individuals would soon follow suit.
Someone offered the couple a pair of rose gold rings with diamonds worth R45,000 ($630). Coca Cola ZA offered to sponsor the soft drinks at the wedding while Woolsworth SA and other shopping centers offered GCs or cash of varying amounts.
There were also people who offered to pay for the couple’s outfits, shoes, and various accessories. A lot also offered their services – as wedding planner,as makeup artist, as designer for the wedding venue, as landscaper, as minister, as photographer with free photos, and so much more! Open View Forever promised them a brand new 42” TV with a fully installed decorder.
Soon, there were offers for all-expenses paid honeymoon getaway to various exotic destinations from many travel agencies. Someone offered to pay for the wedding venue, wherever the couple chose. Seeing that there were so many offers for a honeymoon trip for the couple, Audi South Africa also offered their own solution, “These honeymoon destinations look far. Someone needs to drive them. We got you. #KFCProposal.”

While it was Anele had a good laugh over the ‘cheap’ proposal, it was a blessing in disguise because the couple is now having the grandest wedding – and they won’t even have to pay for a thing! Because even the marriage certificate already has a sponsor. Wow.
