Senior citizens are not allowed to go out amid concerns that they might contract COVID-19. Yet there are still many old people walking in the streets, particularly those who live alone and those who have no choice but to go out to earn a living.
One of these old but hardworking people was identified only as “Tatay Rodrigo”, a resident of Brgy. West Rembo in Makati City. At age 74, he is among those who are not allowed to leave their homes amid the COVID-19 crisis, but hardworking Tatay Rodrigo continues to roam around the neighborhoods in the locality to sell fish.
The 74-year-old fish vendor is well known in the area for the fish he sells at cheaper prices than what you can buy from regular market stalls. He recently went viral after netizen David Drahc shared some of his photos in an appeal for help so this old man wouldn’t have to work so hard to earn money.
“Sa taga-West Rembo, every morning si tatay naglalako ng isda gamit niya bike. Sana dyan na kayo bumili kasi senior citizen na po siya tsaka medyo less ‘yung presyo niya,” David wrote.
A number of netizens commented on his post, saying that they often see Tatay Rodrigo in the neighborhood, selling his fish on that old bike. Instead of riding the bike, there are times when he would just push it along.
Taking pity on Tatay Rodrigo’s plight and hoping that they could provide for his needs in the coming weeks, a group called “Quarantine Tribute Tips” responded to David’s call for help. They brought groceries for Tatay Rodrigo. He was told that he can use the groceries for food or start a small sari-sari store.
The old vendor was in tears as he thanked the group. When asked if he still had a request to make, he simply asked them if they could pay for his haircut. Awwww.
“Malaking tulong daw po kasi pwede niya rin daw ilako itong mga bigay natin sa kanya,” said Ayla Conda, a member of Quarantine Tribute Tips.
“Sinamahan din namin siya magpagupit, ‘yun na lang daw request niya kasi sobra-sobra na raw po bigay namin.”
God bless po, Tatay Rodrigo.
