Proving that poverty is not a hindrance to success, the son of a poor farmer recently went viral for graduating cum laude with the course of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from Ateneo de Naga University, a school for ‘rich kids’.
Even as a child, Ariel Quiom had always wanted to finish his studies and graduate from college to give his parents a better life. Born in a poor family with parents who are farmers, Ariel would help them in the field and would walk an hour to the mountain, often carrying heavy load so they have some food.
Life was difficult for the family, yet Ariel never stopped dreaming.
A smart kid, Ariel grew up a consistent honor student. He didn’t mind walking to school as long as he gets to complete his education.
When his mother, Solita Quiom, told him they could not send him to college because they could not really afford the tuition fees, Ariel promised they wouldn’t have to worry as he would be the one to find a way to go to school.
He took the entrance test and applied for scholarship at no less than the Ateneo de Naga University in Naga, Camarines Sur – and he passed! He received full scholarship plus free board and lodging at the university’s dormitory.
His mother cried upon hearing the news as she was not sure whether they could afford to support Ariel’s education in Ateneo. But the young man persevered – and recently graduated cum laude!
