Despite Earning Just Php500 a Month, Single Mom Successfully Sends Three Kids to College

Despite earning just Php500 a month, a single mom was able to successfully send her three kids to college – and they are now degree holders!

It is amazing that though she only earned so little, Maria Dizon-Buncalan managed to raise her three children, Aiza, 31, Argie, 27, and Ace, 24, by herself.

Nanay Maria, a midwife, left her husband but was still able to raise the kids by herself, with the help of kind doctors at the Dr. Arturo P. Pingoy Medical Center (DAPPMC) in Koronadal City, South Cotabato. Each time she assists them, the doctors would give her extra cash because they knew the challenges she is facing.

Despite being poor, Nanay Maria valued education. She made sure to enroll her kids at St. Alexius College in Koronadal, a school also owned by the Pingoy family. She was allowed to pay the kids’ tuition fees through salary deduction. But with three kids enrolled, that meant she only got a take-home pay of Php500 a month.

Sa tuition nila Aiza noon, binabawasan ako ng Php1,500 every 15th and katapusan ng buwan,” Nanay Maria recalled.

But this supermom did everything to make ends meet.

She’s working in a hospital and hindi siya registered, meaning mas mababa sa regular na sahod iyong sahod niya… Iyong tuition namin is salary deduction. Every sahod ng mom namin, may mga bawas pa iyon from PAG-IBIG, PhilHealth, SSS,” Aiza recalled.

So bale naiiwan sa sahod ng mom ko is Php500. Imagine tatlo kaming nag-aaral.

Knowing that Php500 is too little for a family of four to survive, Nanay Maria found various odd jobs to earn extra cash on her free time. She would even help friends harvest rice or corn, just to earn some money during harvest season.

The kids understand their mom’s sacrifices and would help as much as they could. They also did well in their studies, knowing that is the best way they could repay her for everything.

Aiza and Argie both graduated as radiologic technologist while Ace completed aviation electronics technology. Aiza now works in Riyadh while Argie is at the Lariosa Hospital in Surallah, South Cotabato. Meanwhile, Ace is an aviation instructor.

The three are now regularly giving their mom part of their salary – and she was able to repay all the loans she incurred while the kids were studying. The three also promised to give her a better life so she wouldn’t have to worry about a thing anymore.
