A number of places in the Philippines are still under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), with certain activities like socializing, going to the beach, and even jogging or walking are prohibited. There’s also a liquor ban in place, even in areas that are only under general community quarantine (GCQ).
The entire province of Cebu is under ECQ; that means that stricter rules are imposed across the island. Most public transportation have been suspended while limits are placed for private vehicles, with everyone only allowed to go out if they have a quarantine pass.
Cebu beauty queen Maria Gigante was caught at the beach with her Spanish boyfriend, Javier Filosa Castro, for swimming and violation of the liquor ban at 5:30 PM on Sunday, May 10, 2020, at Barangay Basdiot in Moalboal town.
Police Senior Master Sergeant Jennelyn Awe, desk officer of the Moalboal Police Station, said that they received reports from concerned locals about the arrival of the beauty queen and her boyfriend. Tourist police, who were patrolling the coastal area of Barangay Basdiot, spotted the two at the beach, taking a dip and having some drinks.
After police found out that they came from Cebu City where over 1,000 cases of COVID-19 have already been recorded, they were immediately placed in an isolation cell at the Moalboal Police Station.
Police were puzzled how the two reached Moalboal from Cebu City, some 85 km away, considering the many checkpoints they had to pass. It turned out that the two lied about their itinerary, claiming they were headed for Alegria town for relief goods distribution.
The two now face complaints of disobedience to a person in authority and violation of the liquor ban.
Netizens were quick to point out that Gigante can’t say she doesn’t know about the law, particularly because she and other beauty queens, such as Miss Universe Philippines 2019 Gazini Ganados, were part of the campaign that encouraged people to stay at home during the ECQ to stop the virus from spreading.
Many were angry that she didn’t just break quarantine restrictions but also lied to the authorities, using distribution of relief goods as guise to sneak to the beach.
