Aspiring Teacher Refuses to Give Up Despite Failing LET Seven Times, Finally Succeeds

“If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again!”

A lot of people easily get discouraged and would refuse to try again once they fail, thinking that there is no use in doing something again because they would likely fail again. Many people fear failure, especially repeat failure; thus, they simply give up.

But one aspiring teacher in Zamboanga recently went viral for not giving up despite failing the Licensure Exam for Teachers (LET) many times!

Nelma M. Dahimulla graduated from Bachelor of Secondary Education, major in Agri-Fishery arts. Just like many new graduates, she was excited to take the board exams, pass the test and get her license, and apply for a job related to her field.

But things didn’t go as planned. She didn’t pass on her first take; nor did she get her license on the second take or the third or the fourth or the fifth! She found herself taking test after test to get her license, but she continued to fail in her sixth and seventh take.

Others would have given up at this point, yet Nelma was determined to reach for her dreams. Just like other students and graduates before her, she knows the lessons but doing self-review was not enough.

She shared on Facebook:

My first take naka 68 lang ata ako dayyy. masakit sobra pero madali lang man makamove on agad kasi inisip ko “ah wala to first time ko kasi kaya nanibago lang siguro tapos wala pang review”.

Most specially my parents pero dahil pangarap namin to at gusto ko to maachieve at mas maging proud pa ang parents ko sakin at magawa ko ang gusto kong gawin that is to inspire other people through my profession I love teaching others and giving inspirational advices.

Feeling frustrated about those previous failures, yet also not willing to give up, Nelma decided it was time for her to enroll in a review center.

Di ako nagreview center before kasi mahal eh kapos pa sa datung at sobrang daming what if sa brain cells ko na hindi pa nga ako nag eexam iniisip ko na what if mabagsak ako ?sayang pera kasi wala talaga akong tiwala sa sarili ko,” she mused.

She picked a Carl Balita Review Center (CBRC) in Zamboanga. There, she was able to final have a refresher course about lessons that could come out in the board exams. But what really mattered is that the review center also helped build her confidence, pushing her to try her best in whatever lessons she had to face, no matter how easy or difficult the subject matter might be.

The review center also encouraged repeaters like her to continue doing their best, admiring them for not giving up.

“Pinaparealize sayo ng mga lecturer ang worth mo na kahit Repeater ka di yun pwedeng maging basehan na iba kana sa mga first take lang at mga Nag Top.

Naiyak talaga ako ng sinabi nina Sir Carl, Maam Eman, Sir Janus, Sir Firdz, Sir Aziz and sa iba pang lecturer na Believe sila samin at saludo sila sa tapang naming mga Repeaters na kahit paulit ulit na bumagsak kami still bumabangon parin kami para lumaban. Sobra talaga ako naiyak that day as in.

And though she failed LET in the past seven times that she took the licensure exams, Nelma was finally able to become a licensed professional teacher on her eighth take! While it took her eight takes and 4 years after graduation to finally obtain her license, it was a wonderful victory that she was finally able to fulfill her dreams…

Congratulations, Ma’am Nelma!
