He might already be 93 years old, but a grandfather in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat is still the one helping his grandchildren with their modules in school! Because he can’t see well, he uses a magnifying glass to read the small letters on their worksheets. What a wonderful grandpa!
Featured on DepEd Tayo Soccsksargen, the loving grandpa was identified as Lolo Bonifacio “Boning” Gedaya Santolaja, Sr. who still volunteers as treasurer of the Office of Senior Citizen (OSCA) in Tacurong City, without pay.
It turns out that Lolo Boning simply loves to do this and refused to accept payment for his services because this is just a “labor of love”.
Whenever he has extra time from his work, he would call his grandchildren to help them out with their modules. It does not matter to Lolo Boning that he’s already 93 years old or that the doesn’t know all the kids’ lessons.
Using a magnifying glass, he would study the learning materials so he could teach his grandchildren how to answer their modules.
It also turned out that Lolo Boning was not able to finish his college education, yet he was able to send all his children to school.
He recalls that back when he was in college, he really enjoyed accounting subjects even if many students are actually afraid of the course. He took up BS Accountancy. Though he was not able to complete the course, he was able to land a job as cashier at one of the largest cooperatives in the region.
Lolo Boning is truly an admirable man! Kudos for being your grandkids’ teacher, Lolo Boning.
