87-Year-Old COVID-19 Patient Goes Viral as He Watched Sunset with Young Doctor

After being in the hospital for a month because he tested positive for COVID-19, an 87-year-old man thought he would not live to see the sun again.

Trapped inside the hospital for weeks, along with the doctors and other medical workers trying to save their lives, there was little hope for many confined at the People’s Hospital of Wuhan University in Wuhan, China. They were in ground zero.

On March 5, 27-year-old Liu Kai who works at doctor at the hospital was transporting an 87-year-old patient for CT scan when he noticed the sunset outside. He asked the patient whether he would like to stop a moment and enjoy the sun.

It was the first time that the sick patient and his overworked doctor had seen the sun for many weeks – and it became one of the sweetest, most beautiful photos taken amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Taken by another health worker, the picture went viral as it touched so many people’s hearts.

The picture also brought tears to many people’s eyes. They were watching the sunset together, this young doctor and his old patient. It is so symbolic as the sunset is often seen as a symbol of an ending. People cried for the two, but also prayed harder that they would overcome this big challenge.

Days later, Kai was happy to announce that the patient has been discharged from the hospital! The old man, a violinist, wanted to play the violin for the medical staff who had been there for him and the many others, saving their lives.

That violin concerto would have to wait until better times, but with less and less patients being brought to the hospital and testing positive for COVID-19, such a moment might be here soon…
