A 59-year-old biker has earned netizens’ admiration for his kind deed to street kids. He says that he’s doing this advocacy because he knows exactly how these kids feel because he used to be a ‘batang kalye’ when he was young…
Christmas might still be a few weeks away, but 59-year-old Joey Belo is already handing out gifts to street kids across Metro Manila and nearby provinces. Using a makeshift camper bike that he built from recycled materials, Belo goes around the city to enjoy the scenery and record videos of his trip using his GoPro camera.
Every time he sees kids in the streets, he hands them some gifts to share the spirit of Christmas despite the difficult situation that we are all in right now. For Belo, giving gifts to the kids is something that makes him happy because he understands how the kids feel.
“I was motivated to start this advocacy because I also once lived in the streets. Batang kalye din ako noon, at hindi ako madalas mag-stay sa bahay kasi maliit lang tirahan namin noon,” he explained.
According to Belo, his father used to deliver newspaper for a living. So, it was not so surprising that he would follow a similar path, though it is to give gifts to street kids that he’s making rounds around Metro Manila.
So far, Belo has also gone to the nearby provinces of Laguna, Cavite, and Rizal to share his advocacy.
While doing his advocacy, Belo decided to start vlogging to share what he’s doing in hopes of inspiring others to join his cause or do something similar at their own place.
He launched Bike Camper JBelo on YouTube. Though he only has less than 30 videos on his channel, Belo was able to gain over 260k followers, thanks to the help of 26-year-old Joseph Eliseo whom he met in Muntinlupa.
The younger man was on his way home when Belo gave him a flyer for his YouTube video. Seeing his advocacy, Eliseo shared Belo’s story on Facebook where it went viral. Soon, thousands of people subscribed to his vlog to support his cause. There were also some who sent donations so he could bring more gifts to more kids! Wow.
Due to his advocacy, Belo has been dubbed as the “Santa on Bike” and is on his way to gaining more followers because of his kindness.
“Iba yung pakiramdam kapag nakita mo ‘yong ngiti sa mga bata. Sa mga gusto na tumulong din, kahit in your own little ways, gawin mo. Kahit sa una walang susuporta sa’yo, ‘wag ka matakot. Reach out to them and they will thank you endlessly,” Belo said.
