Terminally-Ill Doctor Donates His Corneas to Save His Last Patient

A 52-year-old orthopedic doctor, who also happens to be the deputy director of a hospital in Jiangsu Province in China is a highly respected doctor with more than 30 years of experience. He performed more than a thousand major surgeries.

However, he was diagnosed with a terminal cancer of the pancreas last July 2016 but the pain of his disease did not stop him from treating patients.

After a year since he was diagnosed with such disease, he knew that he is only counting the days before his death as cancer cells already spread to his other organs. So before he drew his last breath, he decided to save one last patient.

While he is bedridden, he called his mother and told her that he wants to donate all his organs to those who are waiting for a donor. But since cancer cells have already invaded his other organs, he decided to donate just his corneas.

He signed an organ donation form, eight days before he suffered from a coma. As soon as he woke up, he pleaded his doctors to immediately remove his corneas.

He also requested his colleagues to donate all his medical books to the library in the hospital, to help aspiring doctors with their studies.

Doctor Chen’s last wish came true as his corneas were able to help two gentlemen, aged 40 and 50, to regain their vision.

Holding back their tears, family and colleagues all made their final goodbye and they were all reluctant to leave him for the last time.
