An unidentified 67-year-old woman from the United Kingdom had 27 contact lenses removed from her eye; these had been stuck in there for the last 35 years!
She was scheduled for routine cataracts surgery last November in Solihull Hospital near Birmingham. Her ophthalmologist spotted a large mass on one of her eyes which turned out to be 17 disposable contact lenses that had become stuck together in her right eye. Moreover, there were 10 more contact lenses in the same eye.
According to Odditycentral, Dr.Rupal Morjaria, the patient’s specialist trainee ophthalmologist was really surprised to see the unusual case.
“It was such a large mass. All the 17 contact lenses were stuck together. We were really surprised that the patient didn’t notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there.”
The 67-year-old woman had been wearing contact lenses for the last 35 years but she failed to meet the regular optometrist appointments. She was also unaware that so many of her contact lenses were missing and that she thought the discomfort that she was feeling was just caused by dry eyes and her old age.
Dr. Morjaria said that the woman just felt like there was something inside her eye but it was anything to worry about. Luckily, on the case of the patient, the lenses were lodged up together so high up under her eyelid that they would not have been easily spotted.
Their team decided to publicize the case to make everyone aware of safe contact lens use.
“Contact lenses are used all the time, but if they are not appropriately monitored we see people with serious eye infections that can cause them to lose their sight,” Dr. Rupal Morjaria added
