At 58 years old, a millionaire is looking for a worthy successor for his durian farm. And because he’s not getting any younger but his daughter does not seem interested to get married soon, a Thai millionaire announced on Facebook that her daughter’s future husband will receive 10 million baht ($315k) in prize money.
Arnon Rodthong posted the call for potential successors but was quite surprised when he received over 10,000 applications! So, the Thai millionaire change tactics and now wants the applicants to pass a hands-on test at the farm.
The family owns one of the largest durian distribution farms in Thailand. But as Arnon is getting older and doesn’t have sons to manage the business when he retires in a few years, he wants to find someone he could trust to keep the family business going.
His daughter Karnsita holds a degree from Bangkok’s Assumption University and a Chinese-language diploma from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China; but she isn’t interested in finding a husband soon.
“If I wait for a son-in-law to come here and ask [to marry her], it will be too slow, so I’m asking for one right now,” Arnon announced.
He revealed that he doesn’t mind if his future son-in-law is poor and doesn’t have any education, as long as he is hardworking, thrifty, trustworthy, and doesn’t have any vices.
Because this guy would be working in the farm alongside his daughter, Arnon wants him to know the business and should enjoy what he is doing. So, instead of looking through credentials the potential suitors have on paper, Arnon scraps that part and intends to do a hands-on test.
Just like stories about kings putting their daughter’s suitors to a test, this durian tycoon tells the applicants they don’t need to show him their university degrees. Instead, they have to pass the test.
“Let’s all meet on April 1. Pack all your clothes and necessities, and be prepared to stay and work in my durian plantation for three months,” Arnon wrote.
“If there is more than one of you left (after the three months), we will extend (the stint) for another three months… until there is only one man left.”
For sure, work at the plantation will be physically hard and the suitable candidate is also expected to be wise enough to handle the farm’s affairs and also be kind as well as friendly enough to work well alongside the durian empire’s workers!
That’s a tough order for the candidate but whoever wins the test not only gets the fair maiden like in the fairytales but also inherits the kingdom, the durian kingdom. I’m excited to find out who will win!
As for Karnsita, she was surprised by her dad’s announcement but also amused over the test. She actually seems quite excited to also learn who is going to win the test and become her husband!
“I’m not picky. I only want a man that I can bring to social events and take selfies with. I’m not very good-looking myself, so I’m okay with any appearance,” she told reporters.
We hope they would post updates of the test in reality TV style… LOL.
