The 68th edition of the Miss World pageant will take place in Sanya, China on December 8, 2018, and already there are a number of crowd favorites. One of them is the candidate from Japan who is a direct descendant of the famous “One-Eyed Dragon” samurai lord from the 1600s!

Kanako Date traces her lineage just 21 generations back to the famous samurai lord Date Masamune who ruled over what is now known as Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture.

The samurai lord had earned his nickname from the fact that he only has one eye and that he has a fearsome reputation.

Masamune lost sight in his right eye due to having smallpox as a kid. The useless eye was left in its socket until some time in his youth when he reportedly plucked it out after a friend told him the enemy could take it out.

Masamune was famous for his great war adventures and conquests as well as for having a large crescent emblem in front of his helmet. Considered to be an outstanding tactician in his time, Masamune ruled the area with pride and dignity in the 1600s.

Proving her aristocratic lineage, the 22-year-old Kanako is what one would call beauty and brains. She’s currently in her fourth year as law student and already has a long list of accomplishments to her name.

The young lady is fluent in several languages, not just Japanese of course but also in English, German, French, Spanish, and Korean.

She also loves archery and playing the koto, a stringed Japanese instrument. Kanako is also a model and a dancer.

Would Kanako bring home the crown in Miss World 2018? We certainly can’t wait to find out!
