Ice Candy Vendor Who Grew Up in Orphanage Graduates Cum Laude, Adopts a Kid

Growing up poor, Joel Quitariano knew exactly how it felt not to have a family or money to buy food. He had to live in an orphanage out of poverty. So, at a very young age, he dreamed of being able to study and complete his college degree for him to be able to find a good job and live a better life.

The orphanage was a home for the children, but Quitariano knew he could not just depend on them for life. So, he found a way to support himself by selling ice candy.

Through his ice candy business, Quitariano was able to send himself to school. His customers were ready to help a young man fulfill his dreams as they patronize his goods so he can have extra cash for his college education.

As he got more customers and sold more ice candy, Quitariano was able to earn enough to invest in a fridge so he could improve his business. The hardworking young man was able to grow his ice candy business and was already doing quite well for him to adopt a kid from the orphanage. Understanding that life can be difficult at the orphanage, he adopted one kid so he could make a difference to at least one child’s life.

Hindi naman dapat ikahiya ‘yung pagiging working student kasi basta’t marangal ‘yung ginagawa mo,” Quitariano said.

Many also expressed admiration that Quitariano was able to graduate as Cum Laude from his course of Public Administration even with the difficulties he had to face in supporting himself by selling ice candy and also juggling time between his studies and taking care of his adopted son.
