In other countries, part of their culture and tradition before getting married is to pay a dowry to the man. The dowry system in India, in particular, refers to giving durable goods like gold and silver, cash and real or movable properties like houses, lots, and vehicles from the bride’s family to the bridegroom, his parents or his relatives as a condition of the marriage.
It has been more than ten years that 28-year-old Rita Sarkar and her husband, Biswajit Sarkar, have been married. For years, the mother of one had to endure and had already gotten used to the abuse she is getting from her husband. However, she did not imagine that Biswajit would do something far worse.
The Unpaid Dowry
Biswajit has been complaining about the unpaid dowry that Rita’s family did not give him after their marriage. The unpaid dowry is the main reason for his abusive behavior towards his wife. Recently, it was found out that the husband did an unimaginable thing to his wife — that is to steal her kidney and sell it for money for his own.
Two years ago, Rita started to feel a stomach pain. Her husband then took her to a nursing home located in Kolkata where she was informed that she had an inflamed appendix. She was told that once the appendix is removed, she would feel a lot better.
Uncomfortable After the Operation
Although the operation was a success, Rita cannot shake off the feeling that something is not right, especially when her husband told her not to tell anyone about the surgery.
After she returned home, she started to feel a sharp and painful sensation on her lower back. Even after she already begged her husband to take her again to the hospital, he did not hear her plea. Instead, she was confined in their home and was not allowed to see her friends and family.
But three months ago, Rita finally learned of the horror that he husband created in her life. When her relatives took her for an ultrasound at a medical center, it was revealed that one of her kidneys was missing.
I was shattered. I then understood why my husband implored me to keep quiet about the surgery. He sold my kidney because my family couldn’t meet his demand for dowry.
The Promised Dowry
During their marriage in 2005, Rita’s family owed the groom a total of 180,000 Indian Rupees (about $2,800), gold, and silver. According to the wife, Biswajit always complains about not having enough wealth.
After Rita sought help from the West Bengal Police, they arrested Biswajit and his brother. The two were charged with Section 19 (commercially trading human organs) and Section 21 of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act. They are also facing charges of IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) and 498 (detained a married woman with criminal intent).
The worse part is that Bisjawit admitted that he sold his wife’s kidney, but according to him, the whole process was legal, with the kidney sold to a businessman in Chhattisgarh. He also claimed that Rita signed a consent, which she denied.
Rita believes that she was drugged during that time because she couldn’t recall signing any paper or consent. Her condition is also not doing any good. After her right kidney was removed, the other one was infected. She is currently being treated so she can have a well-functioning kidney.
