He has cerebral palsy and finds it difficult to talk properly but 25-year-old Jonel Tejedo did not let that stop him from trying to reach for his dreams – even if that meant selling balut and other street food favorites to send himself to college!
A BS Hospitality Management student at the University of the Cordilleras in Baguio City, Tejedo got the attention of netizen Maria Michelle Awing-Tauli who admired him for doing his best to earn money and send himself to school despite his condition.
“Was so speechless when i saw him coming down the stairs. I really admire him. Despite his condition he manage to sacrifice and earn by doing this. May the young generation imitate his perseverance.. He came from school and need to roam around to sell balot pugo and chicharon. The road may be long and bumpy but success is still at the end of the line,” Awing-Tauli shared on Facebook.
A lot of Tejedo’s schoolmates would soon identify him in the post, commenting that this young man has been doing this for at least 3 years!
Still wearing his school uniform, Tejedo would directly sell the food items after school and during his free time, making the most of his time so he could earn extra cash.
“Kahit may kapansanan ako, kinakaya ko lang lahat-lahat upang maituwid ang aking katauhan upang hindi hadlang ang kapansanan,” Tejedo said.
This admirable young man might have speech problems which led to problems when he was younger, yet he wanted to live his dreams. His father is a taxi driver and his mother is a dishwasher at a nearby carinderia, making it difficult for them to fully support him in college.
But Tejedo is a diligent, hardworking young man who didn’t let this physical disabilities stop him at all.
“Ayaw niya masayang oras niya sa paghahanapbuhay para meron siyang konting panggastos lang, pangpasok, kuha ng pamasahe,” said Pablo Erero, Tejedo’s boss.
“Proud ako kasi kayang-kaya naman po niya ‘yung ginagawa niya.”
What a truly admirable young man!
