Mohammad Afiq Ismail grew up in a farm in Kelantan, Malaysia. He tended to goats and assisted in the farm while his mother would sell cloths in the village. Knowing that education would help his son have a better future, Ismail bin Abas and Norma binti Abdullah made sure to send his son to school.

While in school, Ismail failed in his subjects and had to find another one that would accept his grades. In the new school, however, Ismail discovered that he is actually good in Math after attending an Accounts class.

Upon learning this, the young student found motivation to work harder in school and also hone his skills in the subject. Soon, he received high grades in all his subjects.

After graduating from high school, Ismail was offered a chance to become a Public Service Department (JPA) scholar and study Accounting and Finance at the University of Essex, United Kingdom! Wow.

From a farm boy in Malaysia, Ismail would study at one of the finest universities in the world! His father was so proud of the boy’s achievement that he held a feast for the village.

Life was not always easy for Ismail in the UK, but he did his best in his studies. Who would have thought that a farm boy from Malaysia would reach the UK – and graduate with first class honors at that!

My mother and father have never been on an airplane. I wanted to pay for their tickets as a gift for everything they’ve done for me, for helping me finish my studies. My whole life, I’ve only wanted to give them the best. Not just a degree, but the valuable experience of watching their kid receiving the degree. I knew I wanted to be with my parents during that time,” Ismail said.

So, the young man worked hard as cleaner at the university to earn enough money to pay for his parents’ plane tickets to the UK. He was able to save enough money to bring them to the UK, just in time for his Graduation Day.
