Remember the graduate who was proud of her ‘kargador’ dad? She went viral and became an inspiration to many for her wonderful outlook in life as well as for not being ashamed of her father, a lowly ‘kargador’.
The Kargador’s Daughter
While others might feel a bit embarrassed when asked what their parents did for a living, if they are working menial or blue-collar jobs, Mailyn Esquelito Akoy isn’t one of them.
The daughter of a ‘kargador’, Mailyn did not feel ashamed of her father for having such a job. Instead, she was proud of him and wished that she could ease his burden.
While there were people who mocked their family for being too ambitious in sending her to school, she received a scholarship to study Bachelor of Arts in Economics at Sultan Kudarat State University – Tacurong City Campus in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat.
As Mailyn graduated from college, she became an inspiration to many. She was living proof that everyone has the right to dream – and that even the poor could finish their college education, if they just try their best.
An Inspiring Teacher
After graduation, Mailyn found a job with Toyota but would later take the chance to become a teacher after learning that Notre Dame of Tacurong College – Senior High School Department was looking for a Business Teacher.
She was assigned as adviser of the First Section, STEM12 – Q103, even though she had only begun at the school in the second semester. It was actually much later that people in the school realized she was the girl who had gone viral for her ‘kargador’ dad.
With such an admirable life story, Mailyn would become an inspiration to her students and the other teachers of the school.
To encourage her students to study harder to reach their dreams, she promised to give them a gift if everyone will get their grades up and make it to the Honor Roll. Though she had only been with them for 4 months, Mailyn became close to her students – and they strove hard to improve their grades.
Everyone’s hard work paid off as all the fifty students in Mailyn’s class made it to the Top 10! A total of 7 awardees graduate ‘With High Honors’ while 43 awardees are ‘With Honors’.
Using her talent for drawing and art, Mailyn created portraits for each one of the students in her advisory class, all 50 of them! She also made nine more portraits for students in other sections.
From the proud daughter of a ‘kargador’ to a dedicated teacher who knows how to reward her students’ hard work and determination, Mailyn truly remains an inspiration! Congratulations to you and to all your students… We are proud of you all!
