Daughter Honors ‘Kargador’ Dad, Thanks Him for Hard Work and Sacrifices

Mailyn Esquelito Akoy comes from a poor family whose ‘kargador’ dad continues to work even after her had undergone a medical operation, but she didn’t let those challenges stop from her reaching for her dream. Instead, she used these as motivation to work hard to fulfill her dream of graduating from college and providing a better life for her family.

Living in the squatter’s area, Mailyn and her family endured sleepless nights during rainy season because the area becomes flooded.

To help her parents, Mailyn did not just study hard, she also tried her best to earn extra cash while also avoiding extra-curricular activities in school because she wanted to save the required contributions to use for their food instead.

Though she had to stop for a year after graduating from high school because of poverty, she was able to obtain a scholarship from TESDA to take up Computer Literacy at Nuestra Seniora de Candelaria Parish Church in Sultan Kudarat.

When she passed the entrance exams at Sultan Kudarat State University – Tacurong City Campus, Mailyn enrolled in Bachelor of Arts in Economics with money her mom had to loan through ‘5-6’. Her dad had to work doubly hard to pay off that loan.

Knowing her dad is ‘just a kargador’, a lot of people mocked the family for being too ambitious in sending her to school.

Yet Mailyn did not let these people bring her down. Instead, she used those words to make her strong and to striver harder to graduate from college, not just to prove them wrong but to also fulfill her dream of giving her parents a better life.

She was able to obtain a CHED Scholarship and academic scholarship for being a Dean’s Lister.

Mailyn also shared that her father walks with a limp after breaking a leg when he was hit by a bus, yet he tries his best to work for the family.

This story truly warms the heart… Congratulations, Mailyn!
