Do you still remember the viral ‘Badjao girl?’
Way back in May 2016, a photo of a 13-year-old Badjao girl circulated on Facebook. That girl is Rita Gaviola, who was photographed asking for alms during the Pahiyas Festival in Lucban, Quezon.
Because of her striking looks and features, many people were naturally drawn towards Rita. Even celebrities were curious to know more about the famed ‘Badjao girl.’
That sensational photo paved the way to Rita’s unexpected fame. Ever since she went viral online, many people saw her potential to be the next big star. Soon enough, she started accepting offers in modeling, advertisement, and even television shows.
Rita’s biggest break came when she was picked as the youngest contestant in the popular reality show “Pinoy Big Brother.”
Even though she did not last long inside the house, this opportunity opened many doors for her. Once she stepped outside the house, ‘Badjao girl’ became an instant celebrity.
Presently, she is barely recognizable as the ‘Badjao girl’ who roamed the streets three years ago. Rita is no longer just an online sensation, but she’s also an inspiration to young girls her age.
In the past, Rita’s family lived an impoverished life. But thanks to her television stints, she managed to provide for her parents and siblings. Today, she no longer needs to ask for alms just to get by.
From living on the streets, Rita was able to provide a better life for her family and for her Badjao community as well.
And presently, she’s part of the Kapuso TV series “Sahaya” which is top-billed by Bianca Umali.
It’s amazing how Rita Gaviola has changed throughout the years.
She is no longer the naive ‘Badjao girl’ who was depending on others for help. Thanks to her experience in the show business, she became a strong and independent woman who is an inspiration to others.
