No one knows the exact causes of stomach cancer. Several causes of development of stomach cancer are still under discussion. However, studies have shown that people with certain risk factors are more likely than others to develop stomach cancer.
A risk factor is something that may increase the chance of getting a disease.
The following are presently considered as possible causes:
Frequent consumption of grilled meat, smoked or salted
The Merck Manual, a series of healthcare books for medical professionals and consumers, states that diet plays no role in the genesis of stomach cancer. However, the American Cancer Society lists the following dietary risks, and protective factors, for stomach cancer: “smoked foods, salted fish and meat, and pickled vegetables (appear to increase the risk of stomach cancer.)
