There are a lot of people who look and feel much younger than their actual age – but if that is the case, can you ask the court to legally change your age to match your looks and how you feel?
Well, a 69-year-old Dutch man named Emile Ratelband has filed a petition in court to change his age to 20 years younger, claiming that he feels younger and wants to change his age to match how he feels. Plus, according to Emile, he had undergone a medical evaluation and it showed that his biological age is 45.
Emile believes the court would grant his petition, considering that people can easily change their gender these days, why not change your age? He’s got a point, actually.
“We live in a time when you can change your name and change your gender. Why can’t I decide my own age? When I’m 69, I am limited. If I’m 49, then I can buy a new house, drive a different car, I can take up more work. When I’m on Tinder and it says I’m 69, I don’t get an answer. When I’m 49, with the face I have, I will be in a luxurious position,” Emile explained.
But though it might sound simple for Emile to just slash off some numbers from his age, the petition could cause a lot of legal problems if granted.
After all, Emile wants to change his birthday from March 11, 1949 to March 11, 1969. But while changing the numbers is easy enough, this would mean he would also have to change the dates he went to school, his employment records, etc. Such things are more difficult to change, of course – and it would be funny to imagine that a 1-year-old Emile (21 in real life) had gotten a job and already had a driver’s license!
Unfazed by the controversy his petition has stirred in his hometown and even on the internet, Emile still hopes the petition would be granted. He thinks this is just a simple matter of free will.
And to prove he is serious about his petition, the 69-year-old man said he is willing to cut his pension and get back to working like the 49-year-old person he would be on paper.
If his petition works, perhaps I’ll also file mine and slash some 5 years off my age, huh? LOL.
