Kheris Rogers is a 10-year-old girl who started her own clothing line to boost other young girls’ confidence since she was badly bullied by her classmates; she’s currently in the 5th grade.
Her sister, Taylor Pollard, 22, said to BuzzFeed News that the first elementary school where Kheris was enrolled in had only four black girls in her class; she then became the subject of bullying. Their mom, Erika Pollard, decided to transfer her to a different school because the bullying was severely affecting her self-esteem, she cries a lot and talks about how she doesn’t like her skin tone.
There was this one time when her grade school teacher asked students to draw themselves, then she handed Kheris a black crayon. She said to her teacher “I’m not that dark… I’m brown.”
In late March, Taylor helped her sister boost her confidence by dressing and styling her up for a fashion show, she took pictures of Kheris and posted it on her Twitter account with the caption: “My sister is only 10, but already royalty #FlexinInHerComplexion”.
Taylor’s tweets became viral with over 83,000 likes and 30,000 retweets.
People loved Kheris’ look and attitude. Positive messages to uplift her boost up on social media accounts. This inspired her to launch her own clothing line, to help everyone feel confident with their own skin, especially for younger kids.
Although she gets teased sometimes because of her complexion, whenever she wears her T-shirts, she feels bolder.
“It doesn’t matter how dark or light you are, just knowing that it’s beautiful and that your complexion doesn’t determine your beauty,” said Taylor in an interview with Mic.
Her first stocks were t-shirts in various colors with the mantra “Flexin’ In My Complexion’ and there are new styles coming soon for the summertime. Each shirt costs from $15 and up and all proceeds will be going towards Kheris’ education.
